Many of the surfactants contained in facial cleansers are labeled as being derived from petroleum or plants. Petroleum-derived synthetic surfactants have excellent cleansing and emulsifying powers, but they remove more sebum than necessary and tend to cause the cleanser to remain on the epidermis.
